‘Marks of Motherhood XIII’ by Karen Miller

While the motherhood journey is filled with joyous moments it is also, by its very nature, messy with rough edges and frayed seams.  The experience of motherhood changes a woman immediately, and leaves her with a collection of “marks.”  Laugh lines, stretch marks, depression, loneliness- all are permanently etched onto her being.    Life becomes a balancing act of acknowledging and accepting that she is forever changed, and finding ways to retain a sense of self.  Using the application of a variety of natural dyeing methods to the hand-hooked surface, I attempt to replicate these marks in a tangible way.  The results are always variable and unpredictable, much like the experience of motherhood itself.
