Elaine Woo MacGregor

‘Leaving For Party’ watercolour on paper.

Elaine Woo MacGregor is a Scottish born Chinese artist trained in the Glasgow School of Art. Her work encapsulates the world seen through the eyes of a cross cultural artist. She uses eclectic mark making and imagery to create atmospheric and theatrical scenes. Although her painted stories are often fictitious, elements of the picture are based on real people, places and things. Her work has been shown in the U.K, U.S.A, Australia and Thailand. Elaine's work has been critically recognised by virtue of the Dewar Arts Award, the James Torrance Memorial Award, the Hope Scott Trust Award and the Cross Trust Fund. She now lives in Linlithgow, West Lothian, and teaches in Glasgow and has a studio in Edinburgh.

“My paintings are inspired from personal life experiences and stories of people and places. A feeling of story-telling weaves through my work. The images depict narratives drawn from everyday life to dreams, films and folklore. Recent work includes melting glaciers, watercolour portraits of film and music icons in their youth, portraits of front-line workers, still life paintings, and depictions of motherhood and children. As diverse as the themes suggest, my work is quietly political, contemporary, and personal. Colours, light and space are important in my work, as well as capturing an atmospheric mood and a psychological sense of place.”
