Belinda Kochanowska
Belinda Kochanowska is an artist based in Australia. Kochanowska’s art sails boldly through the rich oceans of pregnancy, birth, motherhood, parenting and the multi faceted ontologies that result from these life altering and often terrifying experiences. Kochanowska views these life experiences through the lens of both ability and disability, as she has given birth to both a disabled and abled child. Neurodiversity is a major lived experience and inspiration of Kochanowska's surreal and fantastical works. Kochanowska is also a Human Rights lawyer and Disability Advocate, with a particular focus on championing Autistic rights.
She has exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions in Australia, USA and UK. Her body of work "Eden of my Flesh" is part of the Birth Rites Collection (UK) https://www.birthritescollection.org.uk/more-works/belinda-kochanowska Created during the pregnancy of Kochanowska's first child, in the series "Eden of my Flesh" anatomical and natural history illustrations in this series are manipulated to express Kochanowska's experience of birth. Alternative mythologies result - joyous, surreal, organic and disquieting. Kochanowska’s photocollages represent the sudden and lucid knowledge of ones own mortality, seized at the point of giving life.
