Elina Medley
I am a visual artist using photography, moving image, drawing and sound. My work begins with a deep observation of form: light, surface, line, rhythm. I am drawn to the curve of a child’s brow or the craggy surface of a tree trunk. This aesthetic preoccupation is a non-verbal process and involves intense examination of my personal surroundings and local landscape: my house, the parks where I run and walk my dog. Informed by feminist art and tapping into wider narratives of women’s work and gender inequalities, my making becomes a thought process as I investigate personal experiences of time, nature, the home, the body and motherhood. I am currently working on a project titled Birch/Koivu, a series of photographic self-portraits taken in local woodland exploring my connection to the Finnish landscape, the changing seasons as well as my personal journey of maternal loss, love and labour.
