Flora Martin
I am a mixed media artist, l work in a wide range of mediums and scale ranging in size from large installations and 'environments' that fill whole rooms, constructed from recycled unwanted fabric and old clothing, string, wool, natural materials and found objects etc. to miniature objects such as my cabinets of curiosities made from matchboxes with 'secret thoughts' written on match sticks inside some of the matchbox 'drawers' and tiny handmade books and found objects in the other drawers, also I have recently made these little hand-stitched hearts made from fabric that I printed some photos of my mixed media collages and paintings on to and stuffed with the filling from an old pillow. I am currently experimenting with different smells and scents using essential oils in the stuffing to created a more sensory experience. My work is very tactile and I invite the viewer in to touch or feel as though they would like to. Recycling and reusing materials are a very important and intrinsic quality and process to my artworks, a lot of my collages are constructed using recycled imagery from magazines etc, which of course is quite a standard practice and what I love about collage work, nothing goes to waste with my artwork, pencil sharpenings, tissues used to wipe paint away or even tears, dried up paint pallets (I often use paper or cardboard as I now have the intention to keep for this purpose) will all find a place somewhere in my artwork.
Like motherhood my artwork is messy, intuitive and experimental with a lot of trial and error going on. I try to remain playful and curious always. I enjoy creating a long side my children and in collaboration with them too, I have 4 children altogether (3 of my own and my stepson) my youngest is 2, eldest is 11. I am fascinated and so inspired by the freedom that children have when creating without the pre-conditioned rules and restrictions that are placed upon us. I have always been drawn to and have had a keen interest towards 'child like' and 'naive' artworks since long before having my own children and it is so wonderful and a constant source of inspiration and positive, creative energy, nurturing and creating amongst my greatest creations that are my children. I grew up in an artistic family, so it has always been a very natural thing for me to express myself creatively and since since a very young age through painting, drawing, writing, cooking, this continued through school and progressed to various courses after my A levels including film and creative writing, culinary arts (posh cooking!) and then I enrolled on the art foundation course at Swindon College which was amazing, and I gained a distinction. I then went on to study Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design and Stroud College. I became pregnant shortly after I completed my 2nd year, so gained an Foundation degree, I do still plan to complete my final year at some point when money and time allows, but motherhood is definitely the stage I am in right now and making art in and amongst is where I'm at. I have taken part in various exhibitions in Stroud over recent years, The Motherhood Exhibition: Metamorphosis in November 2018. Woodruffs Exhibition February 2022. Stroud Coop Summer Art Fair August 2022. Stroud Coop Exhibition October 2022. I am showing my artwork and doing childrens workshops at The Pink Moon Exhibition in Bristol as part of the Full Circle Collective at the Island 6th-8th April 2023.
