Formula For Care? is an exhibition of work by ten artist members of Spilt Milk, presented by Tonic Arts; NHS Lothian Charity’s award-winning Arts in Health and Wellbeing programme.
This exhibition brings together artists working in a range of mediums to represent their diverse perspectives and unique journeys of mothering. The artworks explore both the physical changes to the maternal body as well as the shifts in identity and changing priorities as children grow older, and the effects these have on mothers’ mental wellbeing. The exhibition hopes to encourage us to think about how we care for ourselves and our own health, while caring for others. How do we continue this care when unexpected feelings or circumstances arise, or when things happen beyond our control?
While there are many aspects of mothering that are universal, each person’s journey is completely unique. Our hope is that all mothers can feel less alone on their journeys in the knowledge that each experience is different: there is no one formula for care rather, multiple formulas.
