My recent works on paper are in a liminal space between drawing and painting. These mixed media paintings grapple with memory, personal history, and perception. Throughout the work, I intertwine references to my personal and ancestral history hinting at a larger narrative.
This narrative is dependent on our perception's connection to a delicate thread of cause and effect, which forms our history and colors our present. With a play between depth and flatness, the space I create acts as a convergence of abstraction and place, both interior and exterior: still life, landscape, and figurative. The saccharin romanticism of time and place is counterbalanced with a self-indulgent curiosity that my paintings utilize in clumsy compositions and awkward colors. It is an attempt to make the unworkable work. Like a nervous laugh in a tense situation, these elements create a humorous gesture alongside the elegant and moody.
