The Stories Our Mothers Told Us: Artists in conversation with Becca Pelly-Fry
In this discussion, Becca will speak with four of the artists in the Mythical Mother exhibition about their practice and their interest in the subject of storytelling. Together we will explore how women's stories have been portrayed through the myths and fairytales of different cultures; what is the effect of the portrayal of women on us as mothers, daughters, and members of society? We will also discuss the stories told by our ancestors - the tales and parables passed to us by our own mothers, and how they informed a sense of self. Are they still relevant today, and if not, what should replace them?
Becca is an independent curator, writer and cultural consultant. Originally trained as a sculptor at Northumbria University, she specialises in working with emerging to mid-career artists, creating immersive experiences that encourage interaction and dialogue between art, artist and audience. Her curatorial practice encompasses an interest in materiality and the process of making, through to explorations of human/non-human relationships, symbiosis with the natural world, healing and spirituality. Becca was Director and Curator of Griffin Gallery (2013-2018) and Head Curator for Elephant West, a large experimental art space in White City, for its first year of operation (2018-2019). Becca is also a Master level Reiki therapist and a student of Andean Shamanism, both of which bring a complementary set of practices to her professional and personal life.
The Stories Our Mothers Told Us is one of three online events programmed as part of the Mythical Mother Exhibition.
